Ban the Transportation of Explosive Liquefied Natural Gas by Rail

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a dangerous, highly unstable, and explosive substance composed primarily of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Right now, the gas industry wants to take advantage of a Trump-era rule that allows the transport of volatile LNG by rail, including a route from northeast Pennsylvania to an export facility in Gibbstown, New Jersey on the Delaware River.

This project will put the communities along the densely populated route at risk from explosions, threaten the watershed that supplies drinking water to over 13 million people, and drive the climate crisis by releasing large amounts of methane into the atmosphere.

Urge Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s Department of Transportation to protect our communities and fight the climate crisis by banning LNG by rail.

This will put the communities along the route at risk from explosions and threaten the watershed that supplies drinking water to over 13 million people. And if this project is successful, this could be the first of many such terminals along the Eastern seaboard.

Not to mention, the extraction, transportation, and burning of this gas releases large amounts of methane — a major driver of the climate crisis. We have a narrow window to avert the worst impacts of climate change, so we can’t allow this dangerous fossil fuel project to move forward.
