Canada's vast and majestic boreal forest is home to Indigenous communities and threatened wildlife. It also stores twice as much carbon as the world's oil reserves, making it essential in fighting climate change.
But widespread industrial logging for forest products like toilet paper and lumber is destroying a million acres of the boreal every year. The Canadian government uses emissions accounting gimmicks and regulatory loopholes to let the logging industry off the hook for its carbon footprint, undermining efforts to protect the climate-saving boreal — and it needs to end.
Canada should be a world leader in the fight against climate change, but the Canadian government must act to protect the boreal forest if they're serious about tackling our climate crisis.
