For too long, Illinois has relied heavily on burning fossil fuels, like gas, in our buildings for heating and cooking, which harms public health and the environment. This year, some of the state's largest gas utilities have filed massive rate increases, burdening families and locking Illinois into its dependence on fossil gas.

In order to protect Illinoisans from rising heating bills, indoor air pollution, and climate impacts, state leaders must put Illinois on a path toward efficient, affordable, all-electric buildings.

As your constituent, I’m deeply concerned about rising energy prices and Illinois’ dependence on fossil fuels in our homes and buildings. Gas utility companies Ameren Illinois, Peoples Gas, Nicor, and North Shore Gas are proposing major rate hikes all at once, threatening to increase the financial burden of heating our homes. It’s clear that our reliance on an unhealthy, increasingly unaffordable gas system is unsustainable. I'm writing to ask that you and other Illinois leaders hold gas utilities accountable and reduce our reliance on expensive, polluting gas.

It’s time to prioritize people over fossil fuel utility profits and work toward clean buildings solutions that lower our bills and protect our health. This includes policies that:

* ensure that utility regulators can hold gas utilities accountable for improving energy efficiency, supporting clean all-electric appliances, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the health impacts of fossil fuel pollution 
* require buildings to become more energy efficient and encourage the adoption of all-electric appliances
* end subsidies for the expansion of the gas system
* make an actionable plan for moving away from fossil fuels in our homes, and towards cleaner and more affordable technologies for heating and cooking
* ensure low-income and environmental justice communities are prioritized in the transition to clean, healthy solutions for Illinois buildings

Gas utilities across the state, from Peoples Gas to Ameren Illinois, MUST be held accountable to residents and to reducing air pollution and climate emissions. Illinois should be investing in solutions like weatherization, energy efficiency, and electric appliances–not more fossil fuels.
