Forests are natural climate solutions. But mature forests and trees on federal lands are threatened by on-going logging, in spite of President Biden’s executive order to conserve them. We need strong, lasting regulatory protections for mature forests to remain in place to mitigate climate change and to maintain their natural benefits for future generations.

Forests are natural climate solutions – especially our country’s mature and old-growth forests and trees. But mature forests on federal lands are threatened by on-going logging.

These vital forests fight the climate crisis by storing and absorbing large amounts of carbon, in addition to providing the public with clean drinking water, habitat for imperiled wildlife, and world-class recreational opportunities.

When these mature trees are cut down and processed, much of their stored carbon is rapidly released - and recapturing it through forest regrowth takes decades or even centuries. But climate change is upon us now – we don’t have time to regrow forests.

Last year, President Biden thankfully issued an executive order recognizing the importance of mature and old-growth forests in the fight against climate change. It was a welcome move, and urgent follow-up action is needed to ensure these climate-critical forests are meaningfully protected from logging.

Tell the Biden administration to realize the promise of their executive order by creating strong, lasting regulatory protections for mature forests on federal lands.

Protecting mature and old-growth trees and forests would be a key piece of U.S. climate policy, a sign of international leadership, and an enduring legacy of your administration.

Safeguarding and expanding carbon-rich forests on Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management lands is one of the most important, cost-effective, and timely ways to fight the climate crisis. Mature trees store and absorb large amounts of carbon pollution in addition to providing clean drinking water, habitat for imperiled wildlife, and world-class recreational opportunities. Larger, older trees are also more fire resistant, and the rule would allow for necessary efforts to address the risk of fire.

Unfortunately, vital mature forests on federal lands continue to be threatened by logging, in spite of your executive order to conserve them. We need to ensure America's mature and old-growth trees and forests are protected to mitigate climate change, and to maintain their natural benefits for future generations.
