Two of America's most endangered whale populations, Rice's whales and North Atlantic right whales, could disappear forever if anti-environment members of Congress – including allies of Big Oil – keep up their shameless attacks on wildlife.

Right now, anti-environment members of Congress are spearheading several legislative attacks that could push these whales further toward extinction. And not only are they introducing standalone bills to rescind whale protections and give away whale habitat to the fossil fuel giants, they’re including poisonous provisions attacking whales in must-pass spending bills to give them a better chance at becoming law.

Two of the most critically endangered whale species in the world – the Rice’s whale and the North Atlantic right whale – live almost exclusively off our shores. Only about 50 Rice’s whales and fewer than 340 North Atlantic right whales remain.

I am extremely concerned that Congress is spending time considering poisonous legislation that would drive these desperately endangered whales further toward extinction. This legislation includes standalone bills like the WHALE Act (S. 2986) and RICE’s Whale Act (H.R. 6008) and amendments to the Commerce and Interior appropriations bills.

In particular, I am urging you to oppose:

- Proposals to weaken our bedrock conservation laws, including the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act

- Provisions in must-pass spending bills that would prohibit or delay conservation action for these species

- Legislation that would interfere with the development of science-based rules by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), to protect these species from fatal ship strikes

- Legislation that would prevent action to spare Rice’s whales, and its ribbon of Gulf of Mexico habitat, from oil and gas exploration and drilling

I urge you to strongly oppose any and all bills, amendments, and riders that would undermine protections for America’s endangered whales.
