Once again, Republicans in Congress are trying to make it harder to protect endangered species. The latest effort is called H.R. 7408, which would put indiscriminate logging and partisan politics over endangered species, among many other harmful provisions.

Once again, extremist Republicans in Congress are trying to make it harder to protect endangered species. The latest effort is a bill called H.R. 7408 that would gut Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections for hundreds of threatened and endangered species.

As the world faces twin climate and biodiversity crises, these protections have never been more essential. They help to preserve functioning, intact ecosystems on which all life — including healthy people — depends.

And with 1 million species worldwide at risk of extinction, we need to block H.R. 7408 and any future bills that would gut ESA protections and drive imperiled wildlife ever further to the brink.

I am extremely frustrated by the continuing attacks on the Endangered Species Act through standalone policy proposals and poison pill riders that aim to gut protections for vulnerable species.

H.R. 7408 is the latest assault. It comes on the heels of numerous attempts to block or strip protections from individual species and to undermine the ESA in its entirety through harmful amendments to must-pass legislation and other individual bills. H.R. 7408 is just another attempt to yet again gut protections for hundreds of our most imperiled wildlife species.

As the world faces twin climate and biodiversity crises, these protections – and the ESA – have never been more essential. They help to preserve functioning, intact ecosystems on which all life — including healthy people — depends.

In particular, I am extremely concerned by the provision that would gut protections for threatened species by allowing states to develop their own recovery strategies for the species – even if they do not use the best available science – and provisions that perversely incentivize indiscriminate logging, potentially including old-growth forests.

I strongly urge you to reject H.R. 7408 and any bills like it that would weaken the Endangered Species Act, hamstring the conservation of our most imperiled species and their habitats, and take away vital resources needed for their recovery.
