I am writing to urge you to protect New Jersey residents and businesses from rising gas bills by voting YES on Senate Bill 249.

Due to the volatile price of fossil fuels, gas rates for New Jersey households have soared over 50% in the past two years, shooting up 31% just in the past year. As these gas rates continue to climb, our state leaders must help New Jersey's transition to more affordable clean energy solutions.

S249 sets the foundation for more options for New Jersey residents and businesses to lower their energy bills and breathe cleaner air with the installation of highly efficient heat pumps.  The bill would ensure New Jerseyans continue to reap these benefits, requiring the creation of a program and plans that are aligned with New Jersey’s 2019 Energy Master Plan, which sets a goal to switch 22% of homes to heat pumps by 2030, with plans to convert 90% of homes to zero-emissions heating by 2050.

New Jerseyans who switch from gas to highly efficient electric heat pumps can save up to 41% on their annual energy bills, depending on utility territory. When paired with improved weatherization, New Jerseyans who live in older, draftier homes could save as much as 69% annually on their energy bills. This means thousands of dollars back in people’s pockets each year for businesses and residents across our state.

By voting YES on S249, your constituents who currently rely on gas will not only have access to programs that improve efficiency, but highly efficient electric alternatives such as heat pumps that reduce their climate pollution, deliver healthier air, and lower their energy bills.
