U.S. energy company Mexico Pacific has been trying to turn the Gulf of California — home to nearly 40 percent of all marine mammal species on Earth — into a gas station, shipping climate-destroying liquefied natural gas (LNG) halfway around the world. Now, Mexico Pacific’s original seven-year permit is expiring, and they are asking the Department of Energy for an extension of seven more years. Tell Mexico Pacific to reverse their plans to export dirty energy out of the pristine Gulf of California.

A marine sanctuary with nearly 40 percent of all marine mammal species on Earth — including blue and fin whales, whale sharks, leatherback sea turtles, and thousands of other wildlife species — this is what U.S. energy company Mexico Pacific has been trying to turn into a gas station and shipping channel with its proposal to export filthy liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Gulf of California.

Now, Mexico Pacific’s original seven-year permit is expiring, and despite their own mismanagement, flawed decisionmaking, and mounting opposition to industrialization of the Gulf, they are asking the Department of Energy for an extension of seven more years.

We cannot stand by and let Mexico Pacific — backed by J.P. Morgan and oil giants like Shell, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil — get another free pass to pollute an irreplaceable World Heritage Site. We must raise our voices now because “drill, baby, drill” is not the right solution — for people or for marine life.
