I’m writing as a New Yorker who is deeply worried about threats to the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) during budget negotiations. New Yorkers fought hard for the CLCPA, and we expect it to be fully implemented as the law requires.

For too long, New York has faced avoidable delays and missed opportunities to prioritize proven, cost‑effective clean energy solutions. The CLCPA provides a clear, fair, and affordable path to cutting emissions, lowering household energy bills, improving public health, and creating good‑paying jobs. We should be advancing an economy-wide Cap-and-Invest program, the Clean Air Initiative — not walking away from our responsibilities.

Weakening or retreating from the CLCPA would open the door to unnecessary fossil fuel investments that leave consumers trapped in volatile energy markets. Continued inaction and dependence on fossil fuels will raise energy costs for families and worsen the financial burdens of climate impacts, from storm damage to health harms and rising insurance premiums. That’s neither fair nor affordable for New Yorkers.

I urge you to protect the integrity of New York’s landmark climate law, uphold the trust of the people you serve, and ensure our state delivers a cleaner, healthier, and more affordable future for all.
