Every day, heavy diesel trucks and other vehicles move in and out of warehouses, ports, and railyards across California — and communities nearby pay the price. These industries generate pollution linked to asthma, lung cancer, heart disease, and strokes.

Californians breathe some of the dirtiest air in the country. Over 90% of Californians live in communities impacted by unhealthy levels of air pollution and every year 1,500 people die from air pollution in Southern California alone.

California’s State Assembly is considering a bill right now, the Clean Skies Act (AB 1777), that would help the state regulate pollution from industrial sources. It's a strategy that’s already working in local communities.

As your constituent, I urge you to vote YES on AB 1777, the Clean Skies Act (Garcia).

California has long struggled with some of the worst air quality in the United States, and we know what the sources driving that pollution are. Industrial facilities like warehouses, ports, railyards, and airports, create a constant flow of diesel emissions that pollute the air my neighbors and I breathe.

The health consequences are severe: particulate matter from diesel exhaust penetrates deep into the lungs and bloodstream, contributing to asthma, lung cancer, heart disease, and strokes. For communities of color located near these sites, the exposure levels are up to 43% higher. This is an environmental, health, and justice crisis.

The Clean Skies Act ensures California has the regulatory tools to address this head-on. By clarifying the state’s authority to enact indirect source rules statewide, the bill would hold industrial facilities accountable for the pollution generated by the vehicles and equipment they attract.

This is a proven strategy: local communities across California have already implemented these rules successfully. AB 1777 scales that progress statewide and ensures that California can better regulate these major air pollution sources without federal approval.
