The Trump administration’s Interior Department is attempting to open more than 200,000 acres of public lands for oil and gas leasing near Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument and Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.

This reckless expansion targets an area more than double the size of the first proposed lease sale, which was 79,000 acres. This is yet another push by the administration to hand over public lands for corporate polluter profits.

Public comments are due July 29 so make sure your voice is heard now to defend our public lands.

The consequences of this sale could be devastating, impacting regional air quality, destroying wildlife habitat, and exacerbating the climate crisis. Once these areas are damaged and turned over to development, they are gone forever.

Your public comment opposing this proposal will contribute to protecting our national monuments and parks and their surrounding lands.

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposal to lease 209,000 acres for oil and gas drilling in the Grand Canyon region.

We should not be expanding access to public lands for drilling. Your proposal puts industry profits first and severely threatens clean water, wildlife habitat, and recreation.

With parcels located less than one mile from the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, this plan sets a dangerous precedent for industrializing the doorsteps of our national treasures. Drilling here would cause irreversible loss to the area’s geological history and our country’s conservation legacy, and threaten cultural, spiritual, and historical connections to these lands that are important to numerous Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities.

I urge the BLM to protect our public lands and withdraw these parcels from any future lease sales. Please prioritize protecting these iconic, world renowned landscapes, threatened and endangered wildlife, Tribal resources, and outdoor recreation opportunities for current and future generations.
