Urge the EPA to put a permanent end to the Pebble Mine and finalize STRONG protections for Bristol Bay

Urge the EPA to put a permanent end to the Pebble Mine and finalize STRONG protections for Bristol Bay

The disastrous Pebble Mine has been threatening to destroy Alaska’s beautiful Bristol Bay for more than two decades. Thankfully, the EPA is moving in the right direction with a proposal that, if finalized, would stop the Pebble Mine once and for all and provide lasting protections for parts of Bristol Bay.

The disastrous proposed Pebble Mine has been threatening to destroy Alaska’s beautiful Bristol Bay for more than two decades. The Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to reject the toxic gold and copper mega-mine in 2020 was a promising victory — but a temporary one.

The mining company and its backers have already appealed the Army Corps’ decision and committed to fighting tooth-and-nail to develop the mine.

If fully developed, the Pebble Mine would produce up to 10 billion tons of mining waste that would threaten the largest wild sockeye salmon runs in the world. Bristol Bay’s wild salmon have been the foundation of Alaska Native culture in the region for thousands of years. Bristol Bay continues to support the largest wild salmon commercial fishery on earth, producing half of the world’s supply of wild sockeye salmon, sustaining 15,000 jobs, and generating roughly $2.2 billion in annual economic activity.

Thankfully, President Biden’s EPA is moving in the right direction with its recent Clean Water Act determination that would, if finalized, stop the Pebble Mine once and for all and provide lasting protections for parts of Bristol Bay.

Tell the EPA you support prohibiting the dangerous Pebble Mine and urge the agency to listen to the science and people of Bristol Bay to finalize strong, permanent protections for the region by the end of this year.
