There is no safe level of lead exposure. But millions of old lead pipes contaminate drinking water in homes in every state across the country, causing a lead contamination crisis that is putting the health of our children at risk.
President Biden has promised to remove these lead pipes within 10 years and thankfully, Congress passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021 which includes a $15 billion commitment to replace lead service lines.
But right now, the EPA is allowing state water utilities 30 years or more to get lead pipes out even as more people continue to suffer from contaminated drinking water. Plus, the way it distributes the funds to replace lead pipes is not equitable: the states with the most lead service lines will get significantly less funding than other states with fewer service lines. It should not be this way.
We need the Biden administration to quickly move to replace lead service lines in a fair and equitable manner.
