Demand that Duke Energy work to transition to clean energy in North Carolina, not double-down on dirty fossil fuels!

With energy bills hitting record highs across North Carolina and climate change accelerating worldwide, it’s critical that the North Carolina Utility Commission’s (NCUC) carbon planning process is as effective as possible.
Duke Energy’s proposals don’t even get close to hitting the baseline carbon dioxide emissions decrease set out by the NCUC. Instead of leaning in on clean energy, they have proposed increases in fossil fuel capabilities and nuclear technology that is not commercially available – and would pass its high cost on to North Carolinian ratepayers. To add insult to injury, they have been working to greenwash their solutions in their proposals, and energy experts can’t verify the cost estimates at the heart of their proposed plans.
In addition to Duke’s flawed projections of what their energy investments would cost, they also have not adequately responded to community input, particularly from state environmental justice experts. Duke needs to make a real effort to ensure the protection of historically disadvantaged communities.
We need to tell Duke that this isn’t good enough. We need them to make a real effort to: invest in energy efficiency; speed up deployment of solar and offshore wind capabilities; drop their proposed fossil fuel and nuclear infrastructure increases; and take environmental justice concerns seriously.
