Losing more of our biosphere and our species will be catastrophic to humanity. If we are to secure a safe and healthy future for our planet, world leaders at CoP15 must meet the moment and commit to protecting the natural ecosystems we all depend on.

Tell the leaders at CoP15 to act now to save imperiled species before they’re gone forever!

Scientists have warned that one million plant and animal species are at risk of extinction – many within the next few decades.

Habitat loss, direct exploitation of species, deforestation, and climate change are just some of the activities driving this impending species extinction.

Earlier this year, NRDC delivered tens of thousands of supporter signatures to global leaders, urging them to develop a plan of action to save threatened and endangered species.

Now, those leaders are convening at the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) to discuss how to tackle nature’s rapid decline. NRDC will be on the ground building on our momentum and urging world leaders to commit to an ambitious plan to protect the natural ecosystems our future relies on.

Dear Ms. Mrema and esteemed leaders at CoP15:

Our planet is in the midst of a biodiversity crisis and cannot afford to lose the 1 million plant and wildlife species that are at risk of extinction, many within decades, if we do not act. Industrial agriculture, commercial wildlife trade, climate change, fossil fuel development, and deforestation driven by human activities are leading causes of this crisis.

It's our responsibility to take bold, urgent action to reduce destructive human activity and save wildlife species from extinction.  As you convene for the Conference of the Parties (CoP15), I urge you to finalize an ambitious plan for nature conservation in which you commit to:

1. End human-caused species extinction, and to help endangered species recover
2. Fully and highly protect at least 30 percent of our lands, inland waters, and oceans by 2030, preserving the natural ecosystems we all depend on
3. Eliminate exploitation of species that is illegal, ecologically unsustainable, or threatens our health and puts us at risk of the next global pandemic

Until you commit to striving toward these three goals, I will continue to stand with NRDC and call on you to do your part to protect our biodiversity. Together, we can protect species and wildlife habitats, mitigate climate change, and help secure our planet's safe and healthy future.
