The well-being of protected species – like the Cook Inlet beluga whale, valuable commercial fisheries, and residents of the areas around Cook Inlet are all threatened by Lease Sale 258. This sale in Cook Inlet, Alaska will open up nearly a million acres for oil and gas development – putting all of the above in danger.

Oil and gas development creates countless risks – from oil spills to dangerous noise and ship traffic. It’s also driving climate change. Alaska is already warming faster than any other state in the country. And the effects are noticeable – extreme weather events are more frequent, sea ice is melting, and fisheries are closing as a result.

BOEM must use its authority to reject “business as usual” oil leasing and stop auctioning off our oceans at the cost of our climate, ecosystems, and communities – before it’s too late.

As stewards of our public waters and lands, you have a responsibility to protect our coastlines and the communities and wildlife that rely on pristine, oil-free oceans.

Therefore, I'm highly concerned with your proposal to lease off our coastlines in Alaska for risky, dangerous offshore oil drilling.

Just one spill could harm or kill millions of marine creatures, threaten the livelihoods of those of us who live and work along the coasts, and coat entire coastlines with a layer of crude oil that would take years, if not decades, to clean up.

The U.S. is on track to hit all-time records for both oil and gas production this year. Expanded drilling will have NO impact on rising gas prices. And fossil fuel companies have said themselves that they already have the rights to drill on enough land to sustain production for at least ten years.

Leasing our ocean to oil and gas companies will only lock us into the climate-destroying fossil fuels of the past for decades to come at a time when we need to be rapidly transitioning to 100% clean energy to save our planet.

I implore you to scrap Lease Sale 258, reject Hilcorp’s bid, and consider less harmful alternatives, like assisting the transition to clean energy. The people and wildlife in Cook Inlet deserve better.
