Schools and childcare centers are meant to be places for children to thrive. But when lead gets into drinking water, it presents a grave risk to the development of young bodies and minds. There is no safe level of lead exposure for Michigan’s kids.

Michigan state senators are poised to pass two bills to protect Michigan children from lead in school and childcare center drinking water. Now, the Michigan House is taking up its own Filter First bills — House Bills 4340, 4341, and 4342 — and we need you to tell your state representatives to vote YES and protect Michigan kids. There is no time to waste when it comes to protecting the health and well-being of our children.

It's beyond time for Michigan to get lead out of drinking water in schools and childcare centers, and you can be part of the solution. The “filter-first” approach proposed in House Bills 4340, 4341, and 4342 is the safest, most cost-effective way to help protect children from this source of lead. I am urging you to vote YES on these bills!

These bills will help protect kids from lead in school and childcare center drinking water by:

* Requiring lead-removing filtered drinking water stations in schools.
* Giving childcare centers flexibility to adopt the best filtration option for their center, while still ensuring water provided to kids is filtered.
* Mandating that these institutions test filtered water annually to ensure that the filters are functioning properly.
* Ensuring state-allocated funds for filtered drinking water devices are spent responsibly and effectively.

There is no safe level of lead exposure for children and when water sits in lead water pipes, drinking fountains, and other water fixtures, there is an increased likelihood that lead will be released into that water. I'm urging you to ensure House Bills 4340, 4341, and 4342 become law this year.
