ConocoPhillips’ Willow oil drilling project in the western Arctic will add hundreds of millions of metric tons of carbon pollution to our atmosphere.

These jaw-dropping emissions are virtually guaranteed to accelerate the climate crisis, resulting in more harm to communities already in distress from unnatural floods, droughts, wildfires, and storms. And it'd be a disaster for Arctic wildlife like polar bears, caribou, and migratory birds.

Right now, construction work in the Arctic has stopped because ice roads melt during the spring and summer. No roads mean no heavy machinery. This is our chance to overwhelm ConocoPhillips with letters of opposition they can’t ignore.

I’m writing to express my deep concern and anger over ConocoPhillips’ Willow oil drilling project on federally protected land in Alaska’s Arctic.

Your company’s own statements acknowledge that greenhouse gas emissions are driving up global temperatures. You even say you support the Paris Agreement, which sets a goal to hold the global temperature increase under 1.5°C as a response to climate change.

But these words fall flat when considering the scale of the climate impact Willow will have on our planet. It’s estimated the project will add a staggering 260 million metric tons of carbon pollution to our atmosphere. At these levels, it is virtually guaranteed to accelerate the climate crisis, resulting in more warming and suffering for communities already in distress from worsening floods, droughts, wildfires, and storms.

Plus, the Willow Project would imperil some of the very wildlife species that are already struggling on the frontlines of climate change – like polar bears.

The future of our planet depends on all of our actions today. But you have the unique ability to either hasten or prevent a more dire future.

I urge you to choose the well-being of future generations and stop the Willow Project from moving forward.
