The Virginia State Senate passed a bill (SB737) that would support equitable energy upgrades in peoples’ homes across the Commonwealth. We need your help to get it through the House of Delegates.

SB737 would remove a fossil-fuel friendly giveaway in state law and instead enable electric utilities to swap out old fossil fuel-powered heaters in homes in lower income communities and replace them with energy efficient electric heat pumps. This will help get dirty fossil fuels out of our buildings and lower folks’ heating bills over time.

I’m writing today as your constituent to make sure you’re aware of “SB737: Energy efficiency programs; clarifies definition,” a bill that just arrived in the House of Delegates after being passed through the Virginia State Senate on crossover day.

SB737 would enable electric utilities to swap out old fossil fuel-powered heaters in homes located within lower income communities and replace them with more efficient electric heat pumps. This will help get polluting, antiquated devices out of our buildings and help lower folks’ heating bills over time.

As I’m sure you notice each year, when cold weather arrives, our heating bills – and home carbon emissions – always shoot up because of a common culprit: heaters and furnaces. Electric heat pumps may look unassuming, but they typically cost much less to run than their old style counterparts. And heat pumps can even keep your house warm in extremely cold temperatures – as cold as -15° Fahrenheit!

Transitioning away from older heaters and furnaces is one of the vital and simple cost-saving upgrades we need Virginia’s lawmakers to ensure more people can afford to make in their homes. Please make sure to pass SB737 when it comes to the House of Delegates’ floor.
