Help stop drilling off coastal California

The Trump administration’s Interior Department just announced it’s seeking public comments on its dangerous plan for more offshore oil and gas drilling off the coast of southern and central California. We need to mobilize a massive, nationwide outcry that they won’t be able to ignore. Their proposal threatens endangered whales like West Coast gray whales, generates toxic air pollution that harms our health and drives more climate change-fueled extreme weather, and puts coastal communities one oil spill away from disaster.

The administration must accept public comments on this scheme — so we need to mobilize a massive, nationwide outcry that they won’t be able to ignore.

This announcement comes shortly after the Trump administration recklessly proposed expanding drilling across over a billion acres of U.S. waters, including off the California coast. Plus, Congress has already mandated an unprecedented 36 lease sales for offshore oil and gas drilling.

NRDC and our partners have filed suit in federal court challenging the first of those scheduled lease sales. And last year, we sued the administration over an executive order that would illegally open more than 625 million acres of U.S. waters to offshore oil and gas drilling.

We are prepared to do everything we can, including going to court again, to defend our ocean. But right now, we need your help.

This new public comment period is another important opportunity to tell the Trump administration loud and clear: No more offshore drilling in California or in any U.S. waters!

I urge you not to allow drilling off the coast of southern and central California or in any of our public waters.

I am very concerned about your draft offshore drilling plan to open over a billion acres of federal waters, including off the coast of California.

The U.S. already has more than enough energy to meet demand. And last summer Congress also mandated that an unprecedented 36 offshore oil and gas lease sales be held over the next 15 years. We don’t need even more oil, and certainly not at such great risk to our economy and environment.

Coastal communities and economies are too valuable to put at risk of oil spills and other offshore drilling impacts. California’s ocean economy alone employs nearly half a million people and generates over $44 billion in annual GDP that includes tourism, recreation, fishing, and shipping — a single major oil spill will devastate this economic engine that our whole country relies on.

Offshore drilling also threatens endangered whales like West Coast gray whales, which are already in a state of steep decline, while generating toxic air pollution that harms our health and drives more climate change-fueled extreme weather incidents.

Reverse course and do not open up California or any more U.S. waters to offshore drilling.
