California’s coastal waters are under threat from climate change and biodiversity loss but if we act quickly we can give them a fighting chance. The California Fish and Game Commission is considering the future of our state’s marine protections — and they need to hear from Californians like you.

Along with our co-sponsors, NRDC is proposing to add two new Tribal marine protected areas which would protect rich coastal habitat from harmful industrial activities.

Research shows these protections work — fish grow larger and more abundant, wildlife populations are healthier, and there are more coral, sponges and other animals that are key signs of a thriving habitat.

A recent poll found nearly 80% of California voters support marine protected areas. They need to hear from all the Californians who want a healthy future for our ocean.

The California Fish and Game Commission will vote on new marine protected areas soon. Take action now to generate massive public support to defend our coastal waters.

I am a California resident writing in strong support of the Mishopshno State Marine Conservation Area (Petition 2023-29MPA) off the coast of Carpinteria and the Point Sal State Marine Conservation Area (Petition 2023-28MPA) near the city of Guadalupe.

The Mishopshno SMCA would honor a sacred Chumash area, bolster ecosystem resilience in the face of climate change, enhance Santa Barbara County’s local economies through tourism and ocean recreation, and help stressed fish populations and habitats bounce back. New marine protections in this special area would fill a physical gap in the marine protected area (MPA) network and provide mainland-based access to an MPA for Southern California residents and visitors.

Conserving Point Sal would support Chumash-led marine stewardship and protect a roosting site for vulnerable seabirds, an important haulout site for marine mammals, and a special area that provides a safe haven for fish and invertebrates in their larval life stages.

For over a decade, California’s world-leading network of MPAs have helped fish grow larger and more abundant, wildlife populations become healthier, and critical habitats thrive. And, Californians from all walks of life have benefitted from experiencing the wonder of thriving ocean life. I urge you to approve these proposals and protect California’s critical marine habitats.
