But Congress has mandated an unprecedented 36 lease sales for offshore oil and gas drilling to be held over just 15 years, which is aligned with the Trump administration’s proposal for offshore drilling. Anti-environment members of Congress championed these oil and gas lease sales — now, a growing, bipartisan group of lawmakers is pushing to reverse course.

Both Republican and Democratic members of Congress have proposed at least 10 bills that prohibit oil and gas drilling off many areas of the U.S. coasts, from California to New England to the Gulf. As your constituent, I urge you to back this vital legislation that protects our oceans for future generations.

The U.S. already has more than enough energy to meet demand. But Congress has mandated an unprecedented 36 lease sales for offshore oil and gas drilling to be held over just 15 years, which is aligned with the Trump administration’s plan for offshore drilling. We don’t need even more fossil fuels, and not at such a great risk to our economy and environment.

Coastal communities and economies are too valuable to put at risk of oil spills and other offshore drilling impacts. After the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon disaster, the commercial fishing industry in the Gulf lost around $247 million and thousands of jobs.

Offshore drilling generates toxic air pollution that harms our health and drives more climate change-fueled extreme weather events. It threatens endangered wildlife like Alaska’s Cook Inlet beluga whales and Rice’s whales in the Gulf.
