Toxic PFAS chemicals lurk in everything from the cleaning products we use to the cookware we make dinner with. They have been linked to a range of health problems, including kidney and testicular cancer, high cholesterol, changes in hormone levels, and much more.

The good news is that the New York State Senate passed a bill that would ban the sale of a wide range of household products that contain PFAS — from pet beds to dental floss. Now we need your help to make sure the State Assembly does their part and passes this bill to keep these toxic chemicals out of New York.

I urge you to support A.7738A which would ban toxic PFAS in household textile articles (think pet beds and tablecloths), children's products, cookware, ski waxes, architectural paints, cleaning products, and dental floss. The Senate already passed this important bill – it's the Assembly’s turn! Please co-sponsor this bill and tell Speaker Heastie to bring A.7738A to a vote on Earth Day, April 22.

Exposure to PFAS in our homes has been allowed to go unchecked for far too long and it’s costing New York. NRDC estimates that PFAS pollution will cost the state between $2.7 and $4.4 billion annually in health care related costs and between $32–$54 million annually to filter it from our drinking water.

The current medical literature clearly illustrates the dangers of PFAS. In addition to being associated with serious illnesses like cancer and thyroid disease, it impacts general health by increasing cholesterol levels and changing liver enzymes. PFAS compounds also cross the placenta during pregnancy and are present in breastmilk, posing risks to fetuses and newborn babies. High-levels of PFAS in a mother’s blood have been linked to preeclampsia in pregnancy and decreases in birth weight (the more PFAS present in the body, the greater the decrease in birth weight).

Passing A.7738A on Earth Day would be a monumental win for the health of all New Yorkers. By supporting this bill, you will demonstrate your leadership on protecting the environment. Please cosponsor and VOTE YES to take a stand against companies that continue to contaminate household products with PFAS.
