In just one lease sale, Trump’s Department of Interior is attempting to open nearly 127,000 acres of Colorado public lands — including over 4,000 acres on the top of the Roan Plateau — to reckless oil and gas leasing and drilling.

This cherished landscape is a beloved backcountry zone for hunting, fishing, and other outdoor recreation and features deep box canyons, flowing freshwater streams, and vibrant meadows. Unfortunately, nearly half of the plateau is already dotted with roads and oil and gas well pads.

If this plan proceeds, black bears, cougars, elk, trout, golden eagles, peregrine falcons, and many more species are at risk.

Our commitment is steadfast and we won’t stop now in the fight to protect the Roan Plateau and all of America’s public lands. We must make our voices heard before it’s too late to ensure future generations can experience these unique wildlife habitats and inspiring wild landscapes.

I am writing to express my firm opposition to the Department of Interior’s proposal to open nearly 127,000 acres of public lands — including over 4,000 acres of Colorado’s Roan Plateau — to reckless oil and gas leasing and drilling in the December Colorado lease sale.

The top of the Roan Plateau includes vital habitat for black bears, cougars, and cutthroat trout that must remain free from industrial fragmentation. This rushed proposal prioritizes the profits of corporate polluters over the essential hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation that sustain local economies and communities. Once these unique and inspiring wildlands are paved for roads and drilled for oil wells, their inherent value and character will be permanently altered.

I urge the Department to prioritize responsible wildlife and public land management rather than hurrying into short-sighted sales that devastate irreplaceable landscapes. Please don’t make this regrettable decision to lease these acres to the oil and gas industry and instead preserve the plateau.
