The Trump administration's EPA just proposed abandoning its legal authority to regulate climate pollution from power plants — which are responsible for one-quarter of U.S. carbon emissions. It's the same illegal logic the agency used to repeal the endangerment finding and gut vehicle emission standards.

The consequences would be severe:

More unnatural disasters — from devastating floods and wildfires to deadly heat waves that hit harder and harder every summer
Dirtier air and serious health impacts — more asthma attacks, respiratory illness, heat-related deaths, and premature death, especially in communities already overburdened by pollution
Higher costs for families — from healthcare bills to recovering from climate disasters to rising homeowners' insurance rates

The EPA is legally required under the Clean Air Act to regulate climate pollution. This isn't a policy disagreement — it's an illegal attempt to hand polluters a free pass while the rest of us pay the price.

Over 26,000 NRDC supporters already spoke out against rolling back carbon standards for power plants and another 56,000 put their names on the record against the endangerment finding repeal. I urge you to withdraw the proposal to abandon the EPA's authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.

The EPA is legally required under the Clean Air Act to regulate climate pollution — and walking away from that responsibility will have real consequences for real people. Power plants are already responsible for one-quarter of U.S. carbon emissions. Without limits on that pollution, climate change will get worse, and so will the extreme weather, health impacts, and costs that come with it.

That means more heat-related deaths, asthma attacks, and respiratory illness. Worse allergy seasons. The spread of insect-borne disease. And a higher price tag for all of it — from rising healthcare costs to recovering from floods and wildfires to homeowners' insurance that fewer and fewer families can afford.

This proposal is the latest in a series of moves to strip the EPA of the tools it needs to protect the public — following the repeal of the endangerment finding and the rollback of vehicle emission standards. The courts have repeatedly upheld the EPA's obligation to act on climate pollution. That hasn't changed.

Please reverse course and uphold the EPA's responsibility to protect people — not polluters.
