Make your commitment to end PFAS use public!

An NRDC report and scorecard gave Columbia Sportswear an F for its continued use of PFAS chemicals in its products by 2024.

PFAS — or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — chemicals are a family of approximately 12,000 synthetic chemicals that can cause serious illnesses including liver damage, impact to child development, and cancer, pollute the drinking water of more than 200 million people in the U.S. and they don’t break down in the environment.

Thankfully, after a massive public pressure campaign by NRDC activists, Columbia Sportswear has privately committed to phasing out its use of PFAS by 2024.

This is great news, but until Columbia makes its progress toward this goal public, it can never truly be held accountable. We need to make sure that the company is as transparent as possible with its plans to phase out the use of PFAS in its products!

As a consumer, I am encouraged to learn that you have written a letter to NRDC with a private commitment to end Columbia's use of toxic PFAS in its clothing products by 2024.

PFAS chemicals are linked to serious health problems, such as cancer and thyroid disease, they contaminate drinking water supplies across the country, and they could remain in our environment for decades to come.

Other leading apparel brands understand the risks and are reducing the use of PFAS chemicals in their clothing products, and it is good to see Columbia plans to as well. However, your refusal to immediately publicly announce this goal means there is no transparency or accountability for your whispered promises.

If we're to protect our planet and our health from highly toxic PFAS chemicals, Columbia must provide regular, quarterly reports on its progress toward ending use of PFAS to the public. Until you make your progress transparent, I will work with NRDC to further build a massive public pressure campaign to hold you accountable.
